Todd Snider spent September and October of 2025 at the Purple Building in East Nashville in the middle of a creative burst, chasing what he called "the sound of country music 10 years from now." This meant taking his favorite country music tropes, dismantling and reassembling them over stretched-out, swampy grooves with New Orleans-style horns.

He was so sure of this sound, feel, and his studio band's pliability that he recorded his voice and guitar first, without a band or click track. Todd wanted the band to record after him, so they would have to follow his lead wherever it went.

His excitement over the recordings and the push to capture that much material meant that by mid-October, Todd had recorded his vocal, guitar and the band's rhythm section for at least an album's worth of material, with plans to continue recording. Sadly, Todd passed away before the remaining overdubs and additional songs could be completed.

Fortunately, Todd left behind an unusually detailed trail of notes, emails, voice memos, demos and videos. Co-producers Joe Bisirri and Robbie Crowell followed that roadmap to complete the record as closely to Todd's vision as possible. The result is My Second Rodeo — ten new songs from Todd's final burst of studio work. Funny, strange, reflective and unmistakably Todd.
