This is a lightning fast, one-off album. Professor Longhair was experiencing a renaissance of attention after a lifelong hiatus when he was approached by Bruce Iglauer of Alligator.
Armed with the opportunity to record new music, Fess went into Allen Toussaint’s Sea Saint Studio and gathered some of New Orleans’ finest musicians around him, including his longtime conga accomplice Uganda Roberts and Dr. John on guitar.
This was his big moment. Fess was headlining Jazzfest, playing private parties for John Lennon, his new album was about to be released and he was about to open a major national tour for The Clash when he died in his sleep at the age of just 61.
