At the onset of the '70s Grand Funk Railroad was the pinnacle of American rock 'n' roll, selling out arenas all over the U.S. and beyond. This no-nonsense band from Michigan defined the sound of early working class hard rock groups with their over-the-top sound, Mark Farner's heavy riffing, Mel Schacher's hard-hitting bass lines and Don Brewer's intricate and funky drums. Following the enormous success of the first six Grand Funk Railroad records, Capitol Records issued the double album compilation, Mark, Don and Mel 1969-71: Greatest Hits in 1972 which consummately documents the first stage of the band's bright career. Featured here are early epics like "Time Machine," "Heartbreaker," "Paranoid," "Footstompin' Music" and "Closer to Home (I'm Your Captain)."
