With Acid Bath, Agents of Oblivion, and Deadboy & the Elephantmen, Dax Riggs had always lent heavy music a more melodic bent with his muscular and elastic voice. On his first solo outing, WE ONLY SING OF BLOOD OR LOVE, Riggs gives way almost exclusively to the melodic side of the formula with a great collection of tough blues rockers and rough acoustic gems that find commonality with BLEACH-era Nirvana, '90s metal, and Bad Company. The tracks alternate between the heavy and the intimate, but all foreground Rigg's ace vocals. He is the metal version of Paul Rodgers: someone who can sing simple melodies directly yet loosely, with perfectly seasoned grit for maximum emotional impact. An impressive debut.
