The Aces are ready to greet you now, again. It's been two years since the quartet released its acclaimed debut album, When My Heart Felt Volcanic. And in those two years, the band has opened for 5 Seconds of Summer, headlined its own tour, and spent a countless number of hours documenting everything in-between (and after) into music. The Aces' music is universally relatable and yet deeply personal, showcasing a confidence only time and true friendship can bring. Together, sisters Cristal and Alisa Ramirez (vocals/guitar and drums, respectively), McKenna Petty (bass), and Katie Henderson (lead guitar/vocals) – all friends since grade school in Provo, Utah – explore growing up and falling in love in the 21st century with candid honesty and endearing relatability.
"When we set out to write ‘Under My Influence,' we didn't know exactly what would come out," notes the band. "All we knew was there was one rule. If you felt too vulnerable, if it scared you, then you had to keep going. Every time we wrote a song, that was our mentality. We knew we wanted to come back with an album that left everybody feeling like The Aces would never make the same thing twice. These songs are truly the stories of our lives. ‘Under My Influence' means so many things to us, but above all, it means unapologetically becoming who you are."
And on focus track "801" Alisa says, "801 is the area code for our home state Utah, we wrote this song with a particular setting in mind, The Sun Trapp, one of the only queer clubs in the state. I remember the first time I went being a very euphoric and beautiful experience. Here I was in the middle of my very conservative, religious hometown, surrounded by kids that I went to high school with and were raised just like me, to be scared and follow rules of social norms; yet here we all were breaking free of all that and living the way we wanted to not the way we were told to. It was amazing to see how far everyone had come, including myself."
